Today's Update

Caillee got a complete brush out and could be ready for a long over due bath tomorrow.

The puppies got a visitor today, one of their future moms. They played and played while they were visited. And slept and slept afterwards. Some photos were taken but don't hold your breath for anything.... it's so hard to take pictures of puppies when are running around, unless you like looking at blurs of colours.

Each puppy was given a new toy: one moos, one says bla, and two roar. Lucky Caillee got attention, lots of cookies, and more attention.

Caillee helped me clean up the kitchen while Josie supervised us from the living room.

Learning to lap...

Well, it's three weeks and these little puppies will start learning to lap liquids.

Some are really getting the hang of lapping water. So far, I watch Nyx and Zeus lapping water. Just a little bit and on their own.

A few times now I brought in a warm dish of puppy formula so they can start to learn how to lap their food. Of all the books I have ready so far, most have different suggestions on what to start with and all of them all agree on how to start them. To start a puppy on lapping, you gently push their face in the yummy food so it gets all over their muzzle and they lick it off. Not to sound cruel or anything but it is so funny to watch. They sit back, licking their chomps. You can tell they are thinking about what they are eating. Not really sure about it. They walk through it and get it all over themselves.

Zeus with his eyes explained to me he knew of a better feeding facility than this place [plate] with perfect taking milk, temperature always perfect, and delicious.

Now, guess who was getting the idea of lapping and at least lapping the edges of the plate: Nyx. That's right, Nyx was lapping the edges of the plate and seem to be giving this 'whole food on a plate' thing a try. As for the boys, well, they insist there are better tasting food elsewhere.

Somehow Nyx got formula all over her back and Jersey was licking it off of her. Just don't tell him the stuff originally came from 'the plate'.

What defines a bath?

I found Jersey sleeping with his belly up in the air and all over on top of the water dish. I picked him up and wiped him as dry as I could before placing him in a more dryer part of the puppy area.

So, as I was drying him I was thinking, this could very well be his very first bath.

But, what defines a bath? Is it from being completely emerged in water or could you be partially drenched in water? Does soap need to be always involved? Do you have to be dirty to have a bath? I guess what I am trying to figure out is, was this Jersey's first bath? Him getting his back all wet and being dried off from sleeping in his water dish?

Puppy Watch: Puppy Steps

A few of the puppies, though clumsy, are starting to walk and not very far.

Their living area has been expanded to now included a piddle area and a water dish. The puppies are starting to eliminate on their own and now need an area to do their business. “Poseidon*” was the first to use the piddle area. The next day, I spotted “Jersey Cow*” trying to do his business there and it wasn’t going well for him. I had to clean him up a little bit.

Speaking of “Jersey Cow*”, I think he might have been to the first to catch on to the water thing. I stuck each of their mouth area quickly in the water to try out this wetness. “Jersey Cow” took a lap of it and looks as though he still wasn’t sure about this water after all.

A couple of days later, I spotted “Zeus*” taking a couple of laps of water all on his own.

As for "Nyx*", she is taking all this in stride but would like to point out, for those who may not know this, water dishes generally do not make the best sleeping areas. Just an FYI to every out there.

They are all growing up. Sigh.

Josie wasn't allowed in bedroom for a long while

In the first week of the puppies' lives Josie wasn't allowed in the bedroom. The door way was as far as Josie could get.

During one priceless moment, Caillee got closer to Josie, Josie took a step back as if there was an imaginary line behind the door way.


Now, Josie is allowed in the room. She is allowed a direct line from the door way to the bed. Sorry Josie but Caillee sets the rules for you for the next while.

Guess who we can see some eyes opening first!!!

Guess who is starting to open his eyes first before any other puppies.

The puppy we nicknamed "Zeus*" seems to be the first one we can see some eyes opening up. They are just mere slits right now, but slits in both eyes. Come one, slits counts. They might be fully open by tomorrow! Very exciting.

I swear I saw some tail wiggling!

I swear this happened!

I was giving kisses on the side of “Jersey Cow’s*” face when I notice his tail was waggling. Seriously! I called my hubby’s attention to this and every time he turned my way, “Jersey Cow*” stopped.

“Oh sure, he was waggling his tail”.

I called hubby’s attention over three times and three times the moment was missed. It’s a true story, one I cannot seem to prove at the moment.

I almost had the sable puppy, the one I have been calling Poseidon*, waggling his tail too but not really. I am sure I might have got a half wiggle.

Pre-home Puppy Names

We haven't really given these puppies a pre-home names yet. Someone gave us a great idea in light of all the Olympics was happening at the time of their birth and after reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, why not name some of them after some of the Olympians.

Three boys and one girl.... Well, Kronus had three sons named Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Zeus and Poseidon sound pretty cool. Now would would get the misfortune of getting the name Hades, the god of the underworld? Too cruel.

Only one puppy so far as a nickname that has really suck so far. "Jersey Cow", one, because he is the biggest, and two, he is black and while all over like a cow. So for a week now we have been calling him "Jersey Cow". Turns out Jersey cows are brown, not black and white. Holsteins, Randall Cattle, Friesian cattle , British Friesian Cattle, and Belted Galloway cattle are all black and white in colour. Now of these names have the same ring as "Jersey Cow".

The Sable and while puppy looks rather like a Ayrshire cattle, just a thought.

Been trying to think of a really cool female goddess name for the cute little black female besides the obvious one like Aphrodite. Looking for suggestions!

Of course these puppies' don't have to keep these names, just temporary names while they are home with their mommy.

I can't wait for the little personalities to start to emerge.

Puppy Watch: Day 8

Today would be day 8 for these Havanese puppies. At around 7 to 8 days, puppies should have doubled their birth weight. I pleased to report these little guys did indeed double their birth ways yesterday night. A little hurray for these little guys!

It's also that time to have their pedicures done. Their sharp nails is most likely bother Caillee by now but so far she hasn't complained once.

Nothing to report yet about their eyes, they are still closed tight. It will be very soon.

Puppy Watch: Day 7

It is sooo cute how they stick their little tails up in the air while suckling their mother's milk. I noticed one of them already doing that on day 1. They all do it now and some of their tails are higher and straighter than others. Before you know it there will be a whole row of them with their tails straight in the air while suckling their mother's milk. They use their tails to balance themselves.

Yesterday I started notices some of the puppies using their back legs a little. They would tuck in back leg underneath themselves and then use there leg to assist in moving themselves forward. But picture them still crawling and using their back legs. They would be standing up right closer to day 21; walking and running closer to day 28!

A little update on Caillee

Caillee is not normally a fussy eater. As a matter of fact, I have often commented how Caillee could eat anything, anytime, and any amount, preferably lots. During Caillee’s pregnancy, I used (Raw/uncooked) chicken wings as treats after taking her temperature. Guess where you need to take the temperature on a dog... yeah right, she enjoyed that so hence the chicken wing treats to make her efforts to stand still worth it.

Puppies Watch: Day six

Puppies are born blind and deaf. They are also born in an immature state where their brains and nervous system are still developing.

They are never still, they continually twitch, jerk, and stretch their limbs; this helps to develop their nervous system and muscles.

Today is day six for these adorable puppies. Their eyes are still closed and should open soon, anywhere between day 7 to day 10.

Two days ago already I can spot traces of pigment on their nose and mouth filling in. Today I spot traces of skin peeling off on their ears; their ears will open closer to day 14.
